FIRE ALARM SYSTEM DESIGN

Fire alarm design is a very important stage that you have to concentrate on it and give it more time so that you can fulfill your desire of securing your property or your real estate from fire any damage.

In each country (even in each state) you will find national fire alarm code that should be followed when you are going to design and install a fire alarm system. This fire alarm code is normally called fire alarm regulations or authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), the following are examples of the well known national fire alarm codes:

  • In Canada we have the national Canadian fire alarm code CFAA.
  • In united kingdom we have British standard BS 5839.
  • In the united states we have the NFPA 72.
  • In the Euro area we have EN 54.

All national fire alarm codes have some differences but not too much varieties from each other. The code consists of some guide lines about the installation of fire alarm parts, the spacing between fire detectors and how to arrange them. It also gives you the rules for electric power supply to the fire alarm circuit and the level of sound it should produce in case of fire.

Using the national fire alarm codes, we will give some guides about what topics the fire detection system designer should find inside the fire alarm code before installation in a form of questions:

  1. How many manual call points should you install in the system? May be just one is enough
  2. What is the recommended places to put the manual call point?
  3. How many smoke detectors in the ceiling should you install?
  4. what is the right detector type you should choose: heat detector , or smoke detector or flame detector?
  5. What smoke detector requirements considering placement and spacing you would apply between detectors?
  6. Which room you will put the fire alarm panel in? Is the right?
  7. How to wire a fire alarm system (the detectors’ wiring schematic)?
  8. What places you must consider before fire alarm system installation for fire alarm maintenance or fire alarm testing thereafter?

There are a lot of questions that should be asked before you install a fire alarm system especially when you are going to install a commercial fire alarm in a factory or a plant because these commercial fire alarm systems will cost you a lot of money.

You should acquire fire security system installation training course to check and accept any design performed by fire alarm companies who are specialized in fire and security systems you are going to deal with, you should ensure that they are providing you the suitable design for your application according to your national fire alarm code.
